Three days in New Orleans

Is this long enough to get a sense of any place? Not sure, but we tried to make the most of it . Here are my learnings.

New Orleans has been on my bucket list for a while. The music, the French influence, and the mystique of Voodoo were all part of the appeal. I’m not sure if my impressions of it were due to good marketing, bad Hollywood, or Nova Scotia (and Acadian) myths.

Regardless, with a big anniversary around the corner we decided to plan a short trip in October. It was short because: we couldn’t take much time off, had a limited budget after a long trip to Greece (see this) and honestly we weren’t sure if there would be enough of interest to warrant a longer stay.

We arrived on a Sunday night and stayed until Wednesday late afternoon. We chose those days as it gave us a better deal on airfare. We went early in October as the airfare was pricier as the month went on — maybe due to Halloween? I’m not sure, but the decorations were starting to show up even on the first of the month. Its a city that loves its ghost stories.

As is our preference, we went with a self-catering option (an apartment) but from a company rather than an individual rental from a hosting apps. The company we chose, Sonder, has staff on the premises and if you need anything (like towels) you can request it via the app and a person will deliver it to you promptly. This is our second experience with them and I have no complaints so far. We stayed just outside the French Quarter, crossing Canal Street in the Central…
